Great Escapes
An Ancient Journey Through Greek Wellness
By Sabrina Pirillo
Ancient World, Lap Of Luxury
It is no secret that Greece is a hotspot for vacationers. Steeped in 6,000 years of history, ancient ruins and archaeological landmarks, consumed by radiant sunshine and Mediterranean feasts, this destination is a great escape from the ordinary. In the capital of Athens, the newest member of Grecotel Hotels & Resorts stands in the heart of the city. Referred to as a 1925 neoclassical mansion, The Dolli at Acropolis opened in 2023 and is where extravagance meets intimate luxury—a boutique hotel-maison housing 46 lavish bedrooms, pieds-à-terre and apartments. Imagine waking up in the Acropolis Luxury Junior Suite, pushing open the doors on the private balcony and being greeted by the Acropolis bathed in Grecian sunlight. Step into the oversized tub where views of the archaic archaeological site fill the white marble bathroom, dressing the space with ethereal vibes. A haven of wellness inside and a world of wonder outside. MUST TRY Dolli’s Restaurant. The rooftop restaurant overlooks the sacred and ancient landmark and pairs well with a crisp glass of Melissinos Sauvignon Blanc.
Cultivating Crete
From the mainland to island vibes, Crete has its own identity. It is the largest island in the country boasting incredible weather, thanks to its location close to the equator. Seven kilometres east of the town of Rethymnon, Grecotel offers a unique experience at Agreco Farms. Here, wellness, sustainability and serenity consume all who visit this 40-hectare farm, which operates using organic farming practices that date back hundreds of years. The land encompasses everything from olive trees, vegetables, fruits, herbs and boundless rows of vineyards that look like they touch the sea. Farm tours include a visit to the olive and wine press, flour watermill and wine cellar. The residence also includes a village square, store, restaurant and mini zoo. Everything that grows at Agreco Farms plays a role in the fresh, organic foods that hit the table. MUST TRY “Play Farmer for the Day” and get a hands-on experience on making traditional Cretan food.
A Rejuvenating Mountain
High above a mountaintop, Milia Mountain Retreat and Restaurant is an ecolodge that was restored on the relics of a medieval settlement. It offers various activities, like cooking lessons, workshops and star gazing, which rejuvenate the body, mind and soul. Integrating guests with Cretan life and sustainable practices on the land achieves what Milia refers to as “green wellness.” The rooms mimic their surrounding mountainous area while the fixtures are minimal and cosy and give the sense of what it felt like to live in the Middle Ages, with a modern yet authentic twist. The gastronomy prepared at Milia Restaurant is based on locally sourced produce—with a little help from the Cretan culinary culture. MUST TRY a guided hiking tour around Milia.
