Retreat and Relax

Sweat, soak, seaweed–Canada’s newest spas are inspired by their natural surroundings

By Maryam Siddiqi

Some of Canada’s most exciting new wellness offerings immerse visitors in incredible facilities surrounded by stunning natural environments. From seaweed baths to hot tubs under the Northern Lights, these spas pair wilderness with relaxation to encourage a reset of mind, body and spirit.

Ease on the East Coast

Mysa Nordic Spa nestled on 7.2 hectares in St. Peters Bay, Prince Edward Island, is the first Nordic spa and resort on an island known for its relaxed, friendly vibes. Inspired by Scandinavian thermal bathing traditions, Mysa offers a circuit of hot, cold and rest experiences. Warm up in a silent thermal bath, Finnish or barrel saunas, or eucalyptus steam bath, then dip into the cold plunge, have a cool shower or simply embrace the cold winter air. Rest can be found in front of a crackling fire, or in the Relaxation Room, with views overlooking the bay. And, aside from feeling refreshed physically, you can feel good about your visit from an environmental standpoint as Mysa uses renewable wood-burning energy to power the facility.

Must Try Extend the benefits of the thermal circuit with the Mysa Signature Massage, a 60-minute personalized treatment. mysanordicspa.com

Refresh in the Far North

Canada’s northernmost spa opened in Dawson City, Yukon in June 2024. Created by the team behind boutique hotel Dawson Lodge, this day spa has both indoor and outdoor facilities, including a sauna, steam room, sensory deprivation tank, and a hot tub where you can, if lucky, catch the Northern Lights as you unwind. The spa’s café offers plant-based snacks like smoothies, Nanaimo bars, and curried chickpea focaccia. It’s the perfect pairing after a day of hiking or snowshoeing Dawson City’s wild surrounds.

Soak in the Pacific Northwest

Inspired by the seaweed bathing traditions in Ireland, Moon Jelly is a floating day spa in the heart of Clayoquot Sound off the coast of Tofino, B.C. The bobbing bath house features two wood-fired hot tubs, one filled with salt water, the other with seaweed, as well as a freshwater shower, and a covered gazebo with hammocks hanging over the inlet.

For an adventurous touch, you can dip into the ocean or explore on a stand-up paddleboard. The sustainably harvested seaweed from a nearby kelp farm is rich in antioxidants and minerals, including magnesium which eases muscle tension and aches. Situated within Canada’s first recognized Tribal Park in the territory of Tla-o-qui-aht Nation, Moon Jelly contributes to the Tribal Parks Alliance stewardship program.

Must Try Luxuriate in the seaweed bath. Seaweed has detoxifying properties that calm skin conditions as well as the nervous system. moonjellyspa.ca
