Frankfurt Where Traditions Thrive
Germany’s Modern, Green, Serene “Mainhattan”
By Kateryna Topol
Frankfurt is a cosmopolitan centre where history and tradition meet contemporary culture and culinary diversity. Timber-framed houses and medieval churches shape fairytale backdrops, while glass skyscrapers house MICHELIN-starred restaurants overlooking the city’s leafy green spaces.
Just 20 minutes by train from Frankfurt Airport, the city is often treated as a quick stopover. Yet Germany’s financial capital rewards travellers who linger. Your Frankfurt itinerary can unfold in many ways—long nights out, scenic terrace afternoons, museum hopping, or long nature walks that reveal a surprising green metropolis.
Cultural and Historic Playground
At Römerberg, colourful half-timbered houses and the iconic Frankfurter Römer Town Hall frame the square of this original Old Town, making the district feel like a storybook and is a must-see for first-time visitors.
Art lovers are drawn to Frankfurt’s museum district, Museumsufer, which fringes both banks of the River Main. Visit the Museum of Modern Art near the Old Town before crossing the Eiserner Steg footbridge to explore larger clusters of museums. Take in masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Monet, and Picasso at the Städel Museum before popping into the German Film Museum.
Diverse Culinary Hot Spot
Traditional culinary fare can be found across the city, but its most vibrant example of social gatherings is focused in the Sachsenhausen neigbourhood. The corner of Große und kleine Rittergasse is where people collide for nightly chatter over pints and apple wine (cider), served fresh out of oak barrels. Daheim im Lorsbacher Thal is a local favourite for folks in search of a traditional comfort meal like homemade Frankfurter sausages, schnitzel with green sauce, and fermented cheese.
Ten MICHELIN-starred restaurants showcase extraordinary cuisines with surgical precision plating techniques. Some, like Erno’s Bistro, blend quietly into historic facades, while others like Main Tower Restaurant & Lounge offer elevated panoramic views.
Rise above the city noise in one of Frankfurt’s many rooftop bars. Set above the red clay tiled rooftops, these chic lounges and relaxed terraces are an urban oasis in the heart of Germany’s urban hub.
Naturally Green Metropolis
Despite its urban character, Frankfurt is one of Germany’s greenest cities and home to Europe’s largest inner-city forest. Turn your urban adventure into a mixed vacation by adding a day or two dedicated to seeing the city’s green spaces. By the country’s largest municipal forest, the Frankfurt City Forest, you can navigate trails and ascend Goetheturm for a bird’s-eye view. Be transported into faraway tropical lands at the Frankfurt Palmengarten, or day trip to Lohrberg Vineyard for a closer look at the Hessian apple-wine culture.
In 2022, UNESCO designated this libation with Intangible Cultural Heritage status.
