Going GOCAL

Offering culture, charm and easy access, Greater Ontario is your gateway to adventures in Southern California

By Jessica Huras

With its international airport offering a calmer alternative to the hustle of LAX, it’s easy to think of Greater Ontario—known as GOCAL to the locals—as a stopover on the way to a Southern California adventure. But for those who take the time to explore, GOCAL reveals itself as a vibrant and artistic city, blessed with top-tier museums and entertainment options for all ages and budgets. Combine that with its rich history and comfortable hotels, and you’ve got a destination that’s well worth a visit, whether it’s a stop on a California road trip or a getaway all its own.

Drive or Walk Back in Time

Make a pit stop at Route 66 Historic Cucamonga Service Station, one of only a few original buildings on the famed Route 66. Built in 1915, the station, restored to its 1930s appearance, has a cheerful yellow exterior perfect for a Grammable road trip pic, and it houses a small Route 66 museum. History buffs won’t want to miss a self-guided walking tour of the City of Ontario. Admire the handsome Art Deco façade of the Citizens National Bank on Euclid Avenue, and then check out the nearby “Ontario Through the Years” mural in Ontario Town Square for a look of visionaries and events from bygone days.

Woodworking, World-class Art and Wonder

Have a passion for interior design? A visit to the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts and Crafts is a must. Designed by the famous woodworker Sam Maloof in the ’50s, Maloof’s former home showcases his handcrafted furniture and his private collection of California modern art. Delve deeper in California’s remarkable art scene at the Chaffey Community Museum of Art, which presents works by acclaimed local artists across a range of media and rotating themed exhibitions. Or see the creative arts in action at the Lewis Family Playhouse. From comedy shows to live music, this 560-seat theatre hosts family-friendly performances that are sure to captivate audiences of all ages.

Unwind in Style

As the night descends, it’s time for a sleepover. Perhaps you’ll book a stay at Element Ontario, a Marriott property located near Ontario International Airport, or DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Ontario Airport, equipped with a heated outdoor pool and neat apartment-styled rooms with microwaves and mini-fridges.

Hilton fans may also want to consider the brand’s newest property, Sanctity Hotel Rancho Cucamonga, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, opening this month. Inspired by the five elements of nature, this serene property features rooms decorated in calming neutral tones as well as the only rooftop bar in Rancho Cucamonga.

Did You know?

For a true old-school steakhouse experience, visit the Sycamore Inn on Route 66. Established in 1921 on a historic stagecoach stop, the restaurant that now occupies the space is known for its prime rib and crab cakes.
