Southern California Starts Here
From touchdown to timeless moments, GOCAL is the gateway to sunshine, mountain trails and unique experiences
By Grace Toby
Above the rolling valleys, where California buckwheat and sagebrush scent the mountain air, warm Santa Ana Winds sweep through the canyon as the sun dips low. This is the Golden State’s golden hour.
Just 50 km east of Los Angeles, the neighbouring cities of Ontario and Rancho Cucamonga form the Greater Ontario region (GOCAL). Nestled at the foot-hills of the San Gabriel Mountains, these west coast communities offer a convenient, relaxed alternative to the sprawl of surrounding cities. Basking in year-round sunshine and a warm Mediterranean climate, the area captures the laid-back SoCal spirit where comfort overrides congestion. Touch down at nearby Ontario International Airport (ONT), a traveller-friendly gateway that makes getting here a breeze.
Stay and Relax
Framed by dramatic mountains, the newly built, boutique-style Sanctity Hotel Rancho Cucamonga blends nature with contemporary comfort, creating a serene sanctuary all its own. Big-chain hotels, including the Hilton Garden Inn with an indoor pool, and Hyatt Place also with an outdoor pool, ensure that they can accommodate stays for couples or larger groups.
Shop, Dine and Discover
Retail therapy beckons at Ontario Mills, California’s largest indoor outlet centre with over 200 stores, including iconic brands like Ralph Lauren, Coach, and Saks Off 5th. Prefer sunshine while you shop? Stroll through Victoria Gardens, an open-air complex that blends boutiques and charming outdoor spaces.
Foodies should not miss Haven City Market, a food hall that dishes up flavours from around the world—think gourmet Korean corn dog, Hawaiian garlic shrimp and loaded acai bowls. Wine lovers can sip and swirl their way through the region, starting at award-winning D’Ellena Winery, where tasting flights pair with winemaking lessons. Or unwind on the rustic patio at San Antonio Winery, a longstanding family-owned Southern California winery. Follow the locals in the region to Mars Brewing, where craft beer and backyard BBQ meet for a pint and a plate of tri-tip tacos from the nearby food truck.
Adventure Awaits
Motorheads can take the wheel at K1 Speed, a high-octane go-kart racing track that tests your skills on the asphalt. With majestic mountain ranges and a web of trails nearby, trade in the engine for a pair of runners or a bike—perfect for morning jogs, invigorating hikes, cycling tours or sunset strolls.
Trailblazers who reach the end of Etiwanda Falls Trail are rewarded with a stunning waterfall. Golfers of every level can tee off at Topgolf, a high-tech, game-based driving range where sports meet entertainment—complete with a full-service bar and restaurant. For a thrill that literally takes you higher, head to iFLY Ontario, where guests from kids to adults can suit up and experience the rush of indoor skydiving at speeds of up to 175 km/h.
Within about an hour in any direction, adventure awaits: Head west towards Los Angeles where the Pacific Ocean bike routes ride out to Santa Monica or Huntington Beach. Or enjoy a sunset sail along Marina del Rey and Venice Beach. Head east further into the desert to soak up mid-century charm in Palm Springs or explore the canyons and cacti of Joshua Tree.
Entertainment and Events
For one nostalgic weekend each fall, Euclid Avenue roars to life as a fleet of classic hot rods and vintage tailfins rolls in for the annual Route 66 Cruisin’ Reunion. When December arrives, the boulevard transforms into a winter wonderland, aglow with a cavalcade of lights, a parade, a reindeer run, and an appearance from the man in the red suit. And no matter the season, Toyota Arena keeps the energy high year-round with a packed lineup of live concerts and sporting events.
Did You Know?
Ontario, California, was named by Canadian brothers after their home province of Ontario, Canada.
Fun Fact
Long before Napa and Sonoma became synonymous with wine, Rancho Cucamonga was one of California’s largest wine-producing regions, while the surrounding Southern California Inlands earned the nickname “Citrus Empire” for its thriving orange groves.
