There is no better place than Dorchester County, MD to step
back in time and experience America’s history. Evidence of
wars, slavery, courage and the human spirit still live on today
in the stories, landscape and historical heritage areas that
helped shape what is now known as “The Heart of the
Chesapeake”, due to its central location and heart shape.
Dorchester’s geography and
spirit of independence laid the
groundwork for struggles for
freedom in the region. Rich in farmland,
shipbuilding, and skilled watermen,
the unique position of the Chesapeake
waterways was strategic in supporting
coastal defences. Because of its shipyards
and maritime culture, Dorchester
became a hotspot for privateering,
where locally built vessels harassed
British shipping in the Chesapeake and
Atlantic.
