BY SUSAN B. BARNES
Many of us are seeking new ways and places to enjoy la buena vida (Spanish for the good life), especially when it comes to being outdoors, and especially at this time of year. Central Florida is one such place—days are filled with warm sunshine and cool, clear evenings perfect for stargazing.
Here are a few travel tips for living la buena vida in Central Florida.
BLOOM FROM WITHIN
While any time of year is perfect to visit this peaceful respite in Lake Wales, the peak blooming season at Bok Tower Gardens is expected in February and March. Designed by acclaimed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., this National Historic Landmark is a relaxing natural venue of gardens and woodlands that get you away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Across 101 hectares
INSIDER TIPS: Plan to extend your visit to the gardens and enjoy the Singing Tower carillon concerts performed by Bok Tower Gardens’ full-time carillonneur Geert D’hollander. (Daily at 1 and 3 p.m. through mid-May.) Yoga in the gardens is offered on select Saturdays. For details see boktowergardens.org/events.
FLY HIGH
In Lakeland, your blood will be pumping during the SUN ’n FUN Aerospace Expo as you watch the U.S. Navy Blue Angels fly their F-16s in daring manoeuvres overhead. The annual crowd–pleaser scheduled over five days (March 28-April 2) attracts over 200,000 visitors to this aviation season opener.
LAUGHTER IS CONTAGIOUS
It’s often said that laughter is the best medi- cine. You and your family are sure to encounter much roaring laughter when you set sail on the new Pirate River Quest at LEGOLAND Florida Resort in Winter Haven. The all-new ride opened in January and navi- gates the resort’s natural waterways as guests and pirates seek the lost treasure of Captain Redbeard. Special Pirate Fest Weekends run through February and feature pirate-packed days of play, including character meet-and- greets, entertainment, LEGO builds and special food options. DS
