REVISITING THE JEWELS OF
THE CANADIAN ROCKIES
BY GARY DAVIES
One posh nature hideaway is known as “the Castle in the Rockies,” while the other luxe landmark just cel- ebrated its 100th anniversary last year. Banff Springs Hotel and Jasper Park Lodge, both Fairmont brands, are world-class accommodations in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, and both have undergone facelifts. A $1.4-million renovation has transformed the lake- front cabin experience at Jasper Park Lodge, which celebrated its centennial with activities planned until this summer. Banff Springs, meanwhile, is amid a $35-million renovation with full completion slated for the end of the year.
TAKE THE PASSENGER SEAT
The drive between Banff and Jasper is slightly less than 300 kilometres on Highways 1 and 93. Long recognized in international travel magazines as one of the best drives in the world, this is one trip where you will want the passenger seat. Glaciers and mountain ranges take a backseat only to the numerous wildlife encounters along the way.
MUST TRY On Highway 93 by the
Columbia Icefield check out the Athabasca i Glacier in an Ice Explorer tour or view the
glacier from the glass-floored viewing plat-
form of the Skywalk.

WHY GO NOW?
With continued high infla- tion hampering travel plans, why not stay close to home and enjoy a world-class travel experi- ence in your own country?
DINING UNDER THE STARS
One of the few good things to come out of the COVID pandemic restrictions was Banff Springs’ development of the 360o Dome dining experience, which provides diners with the opportunity to enjoy a private dinner under a glass dome on the Vermillion lawn. At Jasper Park Lodge, meanwhile, guests can enjoy a private Sundeck Dining experi- ence on a sundeck overlooking Lac Beauvert.
MUST TRY Orso Trattoria in the lower level of Jasper Park Lodge boasts modern Italian fare at the foot of the Rockies. Try one of the cocktails from its Classics menu.
TEE IT UP
Designed by world-renowned golf course architect Stanley Thompson in 1924 and 1927 respectively, both the Jasper Park Lodge Golf Course and the Banff Springs Golf Course (the original 18 holes) are consistently ranked in the Top 10 golf courses in Canada. Efforts are underway to bring the Banff Springs course back to its original design after a century of wear and tear. Both clubs are planning centennial celebrations in the next few years.
MUST TRY The fourth hole on the Banff Springs Golf Course, known as the Devil’s Caul- dron, is a Par 3 that must be one of the most photographed holes in Canadian golf. Jasper Park Lodge’s Par 3s were rated among the Top 7 in the world this year, according to GolfDigest. DS
