Rediscover
the Gilded Age
DISCOVERING
HENRY FLAGLER’S WHITEHALL
BY MADELAINE LAFAMBROISE
Step inside the grandeur of
America’s Gilded Age at the Henry
Morrison Flagler Museum, where
opulence and history converge
in the heart of Palm Beach. Known as
Whitehall, this dazzling Beaux-Arts
mansion was once the winter retreat of
oil tycoon and visionary Henry Flagler,
whose dream of transforming Florida into
a playground for the affluent shaped the
state’s destiny.
Here are two ways to enjoy.
Explore “A Palace on Wheels”
Don’t miss Railcar No. 91 proudly displayed
in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion. Built in 1886
by the Jackson and Sharp Company, this
luxurious railcar was once dubbed “A
Palace on Wheels.” With its elegant oak
panelling and refined desk, the railcar
served as Flagler’s personal travel sanctuary.
In 1912, he journeyed aboard it along the
Over-Sea Railroad to Key West, celebrating
the completion of the Florida East Coast
(FEC) Railway in an engineering triumph.
Afternoon Tea with
a Gilded Twist
Experience a touch of Victorian grace at
the Railcar No. 91 Tea Room, where after-
noon tea is served alongside the historic
railcar. Sip on the museum’s exclusive
Whitehall Special Blend tea while gazing
across Lake Worth at the West Palm Beach
skyline. An assortment of savoury sand-
wiches, traditional scones and sweet
treats are gorgeously presented on the
Whitehall Collection china. It’s an elegant
escape into the past that promises a taste
of history in every bite.
