erched just a short walk from the iconic Horseshoe Falls, Canada’s latest must-see attraction comes in an unlikely form: a historic hydroelectric power station.
Revered for nearly a century as “The Cathedral of Power,” this is the location of the Niagara Parks Power Station, which once was home to the world’s largest hydroelectric generators of their kind. Built in 1905, the industrial engineering marvel provided hydropower to this region and areas of New York State. Known as the “Canadian Niagara Power Company generating station,” it
harnessed the powerful energy of the Horseshoe Falls and turned it into a great source of electricity.
Now, years after its turbines came to a halt, the wonder of this hydropower pioneer has been revived in a new visitor experience that highlights both the remarkable history and unique architec- tural features of this 115-year-old landmark. Today, the Niagara Parks Power Station is home to the city’s newest tourist attrac- tion, called “The Tunnel,” which aptly opened this past summer on Canada Day.
